Heavy Mineral Sands
Rare Earths, Titanium, and Zirconium
Energy Fuels is leveraging our unique capabilities in the processing of naturally radioactive ores to become a major U.S. supplier of advanced Rare Earth Materials. Not only is our White Mesa Mill in Utah the largest uranium production facility in the U.S., it is also the perfect location to produce advanced Rare Earth materials, due to our existing licenses, infrastructure and expertise.
Heavy Mineral Sand Projects are among the best and lowest-cost sources of Critical Minerals
Heavy mineral sand mines mainly target titanium and zirconium minerals like ilmenite, rutile, and zircon. However, many of these mines around the World also produce a valuable rare earth mineral concentrate as a low-cost byproduct. These “monazite concentrates” contain some of the best distributions and highest-grades of the “magnet” rare earths” – neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), dysprosium (Dy), and terbium (Tb).
These critical elements are key ingredients in numerous clean energy technologies, including electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), wind energy, and numerous defense-related and other advanced technologies.
Energy Fuels is securing our own low-cost rare earth mineral supply chains for processing in the U.S., while also becoming a major global supplier of titanium and zirconium minerals.
Energy Fuels has secured four (4) major heavy mineral sand (HMS) operations in the Southern Hemisphere. With our recent acquisition of Base Resources, the Company is now operating the established Kwale Operation in Kenya, developing the Toliara Project in Madagascar, and conducting an exploration program in Tanzania. Earlier this year, Energy Fuels entered into a joint venture (JV) with Astron Corporation Limited to develop the Donald Project in Australia. In 2023, Energy Fuels acquired the Bahia Project in Brazil, which is currently in development.
Proven Heavy Mineral Sand Management and Operations Team
The Company has blended the highly-regarded management and operations team from Base Resources, who have a proven track-record of successful HMS project operations which include traditional HMS product lines, processed on site. Energy Fuels HMS operations are headquartered in Perth, Australia.
A Base Resources acquired project, 100% owned mine in Kenya which has operated since 2013 and produces rutile, ilmenite and zircon. The mine is now approaching the end of its life.
A Base Resources acquired project, 100% owned, high grade, long life, development project in Madagascar, rich in ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite.
100% owned heavy mineral sands project in Southern Bahia, Brazil, in a favorable mining jurisdiction, near the municipalities of Alcobaca, Caravelas, and Prado.
Joint venture agreement with Astron Corporation Limited to earn up to 49% interest in a large-scale development project in Australia, containing ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite and xenotime.
