Mike van Akkooi
Mike van Akkooi joined Energy Fuels in July 2025 and was promoted to Executive Vice President in May 2026. He brings a wealth of global experience in the natural resources sector, with a proven track record of steering socio‑politically and commercially complex projects to successful outcomes and building high‑performing, diverse, and geographically dispersed teams.
Over the course of an international career spanning work in more than 50 countries across every continent, Mike has contributed to projects at every stage of the natural resources value chain. His experience ranges from early‑stage exploration and commercial strategy to major project development, operations, and corporate leadership.
Before joining Energy Fuels, Mike served as Senior Vice President at Kinross Gold Corporation, where he led efforts on a wide spectrum of strategic and operational challenges. His portfolio included restoring the company’s license to operate in Mauritania, navigating the complex business environment in Russia, supporting global M&A initiatives, addressing NGO activism in Brazil, and advancing permitting processes in Chile, Ontario, and Alaska.
Mike began his resources career at BHP, holding roles across Commercial Marketing, Minerals Exploration, and the Petroleum Division, as well as at Corporate Headquarters. He was also among the first BHP representatives deployed to Brazil following the Samarco tailings dam failure, where he played a key role in the company’s initial response and stakeholder engagement.
Prior to entering the natural resources industry, Mike built a diverse international career in Defense and Foreign Affairs with the Dutch Government and served as an active Army reserve officer.
He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Amsterdam and an Executive MBA from HEC Paris, completed in partnership with Babson College, Tsinghua University, and Oxford.
