San Rafael Mine
The San Rafael Mine or mining district consists of two separate deposits known as the Down Yonder and the Deep Gold deposits. Down Yonder was originally discovered by Conoco geologists in the late 1960's and the early 1970's. Deep Gold was discovered by Pioneer Uravan geologists in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Atlas Minerals produced 650,292 pounds of U3O8 contained in 173,330 tons of material at an average grade of 0.188% between 1973 and 1982 from the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Over 4 million pounds of uranium and 5.4 million pounds of vanadium have been produced historically in this region, however Vanadium appears to be of insufficient grade for economic recovery at this time.
